Recent market news suggests a prolonged shortage of MLCC components. This shortage continues to create challenges in all electronics market segments. Hardware teams are actively pursuing alternative solutions to minimize the impact of this shortage. In specific applications, they have found KEMET’s KOCAP tantalum polymer capacitors as suitable alternatives. And even, in some cases, KOCAP tantalum polymer capacitors have resulted in an overall cost savings solution. KOCAP tantalum polymer capacitors are ideal solutions when seeking board space savings, a piezo noise-free environment, high capacitance, long stable life performance, and/or lower profile requirements. Tantalum polymer capacitors are selected over other capacitor technologies when application voltages are less than 50V, capacitance needs are between 1µF to 1mF, and application frequencies are below 1MHz. Since replacing ceramic capacitors with tantalum polymer capacitors is not typically one-for-one, designers need to consider several design requirements as outlined in the schematic below.
